ESPN Makes Third Trip to Sundance Square to Kick Off 2019 College Football Season
Sundance Square, the 35-block entertainment district in downtown Fort Worth, hosted thousands of college football fans from all over the country on August 31, as ESPN kicked off the college football season. Throngs of fans were lined up before dawn to get front and center for the College GameDay broadcast, which aired locally from 8 am – 11 am on ESPN live from Sundance Square Plaza in advance of the Oregon - Auburn game at AT&T Stadium.
“We were thrilled to have ESPN back in Sundance Square,” stated Johnny Campbell, President and CEO of Sundance Square. “College football fans came from all over to celebrate the kickoff of College GameDay with us. Our staff counted more than 50 different schools represented in the Plaza during the broadcast. As downtown Fort Worth's living room, we love seeing people come together in Sundance Square Plaza.”
Fans cheered the return of familiar College GameDay personalities, including Coach Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Rece Davis, David Pollack and Maria Taylor.
Auburn alum and Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson rode into the plaza on a motorcycle to thunderous applause from the fans. Jackson is the only player in history to be named an All-Star in both professional baseball and football. Jackson took a seat next to Lee Corso on the set and, naturally, predicted a win for Auburn.
In addition to the cheerleaders and mascots from both Oregon and Auburn, Texas Christian University was well represented with TCU cheerleaders, the TCU Showgirls and SuperFrog.
This is the 33rd season for ESPN College GameDay. In 2014, ESPN broadcast College GameDay live from Sundance Square for the College Football Playoff National Championship, and again in 2015 before the Alabama - Wisconsin game. ESPN also made Sundance Square home during Super Bowl XLV in 2011.
