National School Lunch Week At Texans Can Academies

October 14-18, 2019 is National School Lunch Week and is a time to remind students, parents and communities that a healthy lunch helps students learn, grow and achieve. Something that Texans Can Academies supports all school year.

According to the School Nutrition Association, three-fourths of school districts reported having unpaid student meal debt at the end of the 2016-17 school year. Many students at Texans Can Academies and their families struggle financially and some come to school hungry and without enough money to  purchase their lunches.

Texans Can Academies’ goal is to support their students in any way they can to ensure they receive a quality education and earn their high school diploma. They don’t want their students to have to worry about finances getting in the way of achieving this goal. Therefore to address the wellbeing of students, Texans Can Academies provides free breakfast and lunch to all enrolled students at their 14 campuses in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio.

Fresh vegetables, fruits, salads, and sandwiches are among a few of the options served for lunch. “A new menu item this year is the taco salad, which has already received rave reviews from the students and provides them with a healthy option for lunch,” said Salihah Majors, Texans Can Academies’ Student Nutrition Services Coordinator.

Texans Can Academies graduate thinkers and offer students, aged 14 to 21, who have struggled in a traditional high school setting a second chance at earning their high school diploma. The schools are tuition-free, open enrollment, public high schools of choice. For more information, please visit www.texanscan.org
