Texans Can Academies Fort Worth Students Receive Snack Sacks To Take Home On The Weekends

Over 50 Texans Can Academies’ Fort Worth students are now going home every weekend with “snack sacks” instead of going hungry, thanks to AgWorkers Insurance, Messiah Lutheran Church, Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church and Northgate Church in the Fort Worth area.

Many students depend on school meals for their nutrition but may not be getting adequate nutrition out of school hours, including weekends. The four organizations created the Snack Sack program to provide non-perishable sacks of food for students - all identified by school advisors, teachers and leadership - to take home over the weekends.

The churches and Ag Workers rotate each month to prepare the snack sacks for students which include several small meals and snacks. The four entities either bring in individual food items or write donation checks and then a member of their organization purchases the food items. Volunteers of the church and Ag Workers packs the sacks and delivers them on a weekly basis.

Texans Can Academies are a unique network of 14 dropout prevention and recovery schools located in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. The schools are tuition-free, open enrollment, public high schools of choice serving students who have struggled in a traditional high school setting. Texans Can Academies offers students, aged 14 to 21, a second chance at earning their high school diploma instead of a General Education Development (GED).
