FORT WORTH With gratitude and pride, Valencia Clay shared her journey from a decade on dialysis to receiving a life-changing kidney transplant at Medical City Fort Worth. She spoke during a ceremony where the hospital unveiled a new wall of honor recognizing patients whose final act was organ donation.

After years of testing and preparation, Clay was placed on the transplant list and received her second chance at life from a deceased organ donor in 2015. Now, as both a transplant recipient and registered donor, she advocates for organ donation and encourages others to give the gift of life.

Today its me, but at any moment it could be you, Clay says. Being able to share my story and inspire others to become donors is truly a privilege.

The event was part of National Donate Life Month and honored organ donors and their families for their extraordinary generosity. Held in the neuro intensive care (NSICU) and medical-surgical intensive care units (MSICU), it brought together hospital leaders, caregivers and patients to recognize those who gave the gift of life.

The Tree of Life display features a striking design with engraved leaves, each bearing the name of an organ donor. At its center, a heart-shaped emblem reads I Am Hope, symbolizing the courage and compassion behind every gift. This space offers families and caregivers a place to pause, reflect and recognize the enduring impact of these decisions.

Medical City Fort Worth Expands Emergency Department Capacity

FORT WORTH Medical City Fort Worth celebrated the completion of a $750,000 emergency department expansion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, March 26. Hospital leaders, physicians and colleagues gathered to recognize this milestone in expanding emergency care capacity and supporting growing patient volumes.

The expansion adds 28 treatment spaces, including seven private patient rooms, two consultation rooms, two triage rooms and an expanded internal waiting area. The project also includes new equipment to enhance emergency care delivery.

The enhancements were developed in response to sustained increases in emergency department visits and inpatient volumes, creating the need for additional space to evaluate and treat patients.

FORT WORTH Albert Wayne Kidd recently received the news he had been hoping for: his scans were clear and he is cancer-free after undergoing chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy and follow-up care in Fort Worth. Medical City Fort Worth is the first hospital in Tarrant County to implement a patient monitoring and management protocol for chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy patients following outpatient infusions, reinforcing its commitment to delivering advanced oncology services in the region.

Medical City Fort Worth served as the hospital-based site for expected adverse event monitoring and inpatient management during the post-infusion phase of treatment for Kidd, a 62-year-old from Bowie, Texas. A longtime Tarrant County resident, Kidd said receiving care in Fort Worth was important to him because of his connection to the community and its proximity to his current home. This role is a critical component of the CAR-T therapy continuum of care and requires specialized clinical expertise, rapid-response capabilities and close coordination with certified CAR-T treatment centers.

North Texas Woman Avoids Open-Heart Surgery After First Documented Catheter-Based Valve Treatment

FORT WORTH Tracia Davis, 40, of Euless thought she was having an asthma attack when she began struggling to breathe. Physicians soon discovered a blood clot obstructing her mechanical mitral valve, a rare and life-threatening condition that often requires emergency open-heart surgery.

Doctors told my family the usual options were very risky, Davis says. Im grateful they found another way.

To treat Davis, Medical City Fort Worth successfully performed the first documented stand-alone primary percutaneous transseptal mechanical thrombectomy for obstructive mechanical mitral valve thrombosis using cerebral embolic protection. This minimally invasive approach uses a catheter inserted through a vein in the leg and carefully guided to the atrial septum in the heart to remove the clot and restore blood flow, avoiding open-heart surgery. Protective filters were placed in arteries supplying the brain to reduce the risk of stroke during the procedure.

For Davis, traditional treatment was not considered safe. She had previously undergone two open-heart surgeries and had experienced a recent stroke with intracranial bleeding. Both repeat surgery and clot-dissolving medication carried significant risk.

This case required coordination across structural heart, cardiology and neurointerventional teams, says Farhan Ali, MD, medical director of the Structural Heart Program at Medical City Fort Worth. In a situation where conventional treatment posed elevated risk, a catheter-based approach allowed us to address the obstruction without repeat open-heart surgery.

The procedure highlights the strength of Medical City Fort Worths Structural Heart Program and its ability to manage complex valve emergencies within a comprehensive cardiovascular system of care. By aligning structural heart expertise with stroke intervention capabilities, the hospital advanced a coordinated treatment pathway for high-risk mechanical valve patients.

Medical City Fort Worth expands advanced heart program with LVAD

Fort Worth, Texas Jaime Lugo, a 72-year-old from Tarrant County, feared heart problems would soon stop him from pursuing his passions for auto repair and the outdoors. Thanks to a new treatment option for advanced heart failure at Medical City Fort Worth, Lugo can continue to enjoy those activities with his three young grandchildren.

Lugo was the recipient of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), the first of its kind performed at Medical City Fort Worth. The device offers hope for some patients with advanced heart failure, who previously might have had to travel farther from home for this specialized treatment.

An LVAD is a mechanical pump implanted into the chest that helps the hearts main chamber circulate blood. It can serve as a bridge to transplant or as a long-term therapy for patients who are not transplant candidates.

I want to be healthy and strong so I can spend more time with my grandchildren, Lugo says. The doctors and nurses explained everything and were with me every step of the way. I feel great and I know Im going to be all right.

Just a few days after the surgery, Lugo says he could feel relief in his movement, breathing and overall energy.

FORT WORTH A 69-year-old woman from Fort Worth is back to living a full and active life after becoming the first in Tarrant County tobenefit froma percutaneous tricuspid valve repair performed at Medical City Fort Worth. This minimally invasive procedure is an important advance because it can eliminate the need for open heart surgery.

Tricuspid valve disease occurs when the heart's tricuspid valve fails to close completely, causing blood to flow in the wrong direction. This can potentially lead to life-threatening heart failure. Symptoms include:

Swelling in the legs, ankles, feet and abdomen
Fatigue, weakness
Shortness of breath

FORT WORTH Medical City Fort Worth celebrated the grand opening of its innovative Heart Recovery Clinic on Dec. 3 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new space is dedicated to improving patient outcomes and offering hope for those with heart conditions.

The clinic is located in a newly renovated, easily accessible space designed for patients who may face physical challenges navigating a large hospital. It offers specialized care, including echocardiograms, IV diuretics for volume overload, nutrition counseling, exercise programs, and medical management. Previously known as the heart failure clinic, the name change reflects the hospitals commitment to recovery, not failure.

Were redefining heart care with a focus on recovery, says Cyril Varughese, DO, regional medical director for heart failure. This clinic is about offering hope and improving quality of life to provide healthier tomorrows for patients.

Since its initial launch in 2022, more than 100 patients have received care, with 523 visits completed. Many patients have successfully graduated from requiring continued follow-up care, a testament to the clinic's transformative impact.

Stegall brings more than 27 years of nursing experience, including two decades of leadership within Medical City Healthcare. Before joining Medical City Fort Worth, she served as CNO at Medical City Denton and was instrumental in enhancing patient care and nursing satisfaction. During her tenure, Medical City Denton received the HCA Healthcare Unit of Distinction award for emergency services, heart and vascular care and intensive care for three consecutive years.

FORT WORTH Medical City Fort Worth donated $5,500 and 1,600 pounds of food to the Tarrant Area Food Bank, contributions that will provide more than 30,000 meals to families in need. These donations, part of Medical City Healthcares Summer of Service and Healthy Food for Healthier Tomorrows initiatives, underscore the hospitals commitment to addressing food insecurity in Fort Worth and surrounding areas.

Our monetary donation will help provide more than 30,000 meals to our community. This contribution and the 1,600 pounds of food collected through our summer food drive reinforce our commitment to fighting food insecurity and building healthier tomorrows.

More than 30 Medical City Fort Worth colleagues gathered at the Tarrant Area Food Bank to present the donation check, assist with quality control, and pack bags of fruit for families in need. This volunteer activity was the highlight of the hospital's Summer of Service projects, demonstrating its dedication to community support.

The Tarrant Area Food Bank plays a vital role in the fight against hunger in North Texas. Serving 13 counties, the food bank distributes nutritious food to local pantries, shelters, and community kitchens, feeding thousands of families each month. In addition to assisting the Tarrant Area Food Bank, Medical City Fort Worth colleagues replenished a local outdoor community pantry in the Near Southside area of Fort Worth.

Experts Offer Mosquito Season Safety Tips

FORT WORTH Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, which also ushers in mosquito season. The first mosquito positive for West Nile virus was confirmed in North Texas recently, prompting experts at Medical City Fort Worth to provide tips to help the community stay informed and safe from the potentially deadly Virus.

West Nile Virus is a severe mosquito-borne illness that peaks in the United States from mid-August to early September. The severity of the virus can vary, depending on a person's immune system and existing medical conditions.

Most people infected with West Nile Virus might not show any symptoms. According to the National Library of Medicines National Center for Biotechnology Information, about 25% may develop a mild illness known as West Nile fever. In rare cases, the virus can cause severe neurological symptoms such as meningitis, weakness, paralysis and seizures.

Symptoms may include:

Fever
Headache
Fatigue
Back pain or muscle aches
Rash
Nausea or vomiting

Most mild symptoms can be managed at home with rest and hydration, says Anupama Chennupati, MD, an expert in infectious diseases at Medical City Fort Worth. However, if you experience severe symptoms, including neurological issues, you should seek medical attention immediately at your nearest emergency room.

Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms, as West Nile Virus has no specific antiviral treatment.

Dr. Chennupati suggests residents take the following precautions and practice the Four Ds to protect against West Nile:

Dusk/Dawn: Limit time outside during dusk to dawn, when mosquitos are most active
DEET: Use FDA-approved insect repellents that contain DEET
Dress: Wear long sleeves and pants to minimize skin exposure outside
Drain: Eliminate standing water around the home to reduce mosquito breeding sites

By taking these simple precautions, you can significantly reduce your risk of infection and enjoy a safer summer, says Dr. Chennupati.

Local authorities may also spray areas with mosquito-killing agents during outbreaks to control the mosquito population. Currently, no human vaccine is available for West Nile Virus.

FORT WORTH Medical City Fort Worth has appointed Benjamin Baggi as the hospital's new assistant chief financial officer (ACFO). In this role, he will also support Medical City Weatherford. In this position, he will work closely with hospital leadership to oversee financial operations and strategy and ensure the hospital's continued success in delivering high-quality patient care.

Baggi brings a wealth of experience in financial management and healthcare operations to his new role. Before Medical City Fort Worth, he served as the financial systems and reporting manager at Florida Cancer Specialists in Tampa, Florida, where he played a pivotal role in implementing a new financial reporting and recording system.

In addition to his role at Florida Cancer Specialists, Baggi has held leadership positions in finance at prominent healthcare organizations where he piloted innovative ideas to improve budget timelines and systems, reduce workload and enhance communication between departments.
